I actually...I love using containers for gardening! I actually have quite a few that I put veggies in every year. They are my fail safe :-) I think your tomatoes look like they have had either uneven watering, or not enough water. When you have tomatoes in containers and it is hot you need to make sure you water often. In the height of summer here in Maine (ie, 85-90 degrees) I water twice/day. Once in the morning before the sun comes up and once at night after the sun has started to go down - so that the water doesn't just evaporate.
